According to officials, the gunman at Perry High School appeared to have shot himself in the head.
Officials claimed that a 17-year-old student at Perry High School in Iowa shot and killed a sixth grader on Thursday, injuring four other pupils and a school administrator. He then appeared to take his own life.
Perry, a town of about 7,800 people located about 30 miles northwest of Des Moines, had an active shooter at its high school around 7:37 in the morning, according to police reports.
According to authorities, the gunman was carrying a small-caliber handgun and a pump-action shotgun.
The student who was killed has not yet been identified. According to officials, all other injured parties are likely to live.
Governor Kim Reynolds expressed her condolences to the community and described the shooting as a “senseless tragedy” that has rocked Perry and the state.
An investigation was underway, and the motive has not been disclosed by the authorities.
Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, stated during a press conference that responding officers discovered shot victims and the gunman dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police also discovered a "improvised explosive device," which was made safe, according to the state fire marshal and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Dylan Butler was named as the gunman. According to the facts, he acted alone, according to Mortvedt.
"Butler also made a number of social media posts in and around the time of the shooting," according to him.
Although there were not many students on campus at the time of the shooting—before classes had started—he added that a breakfast programme was in progress.
